   Economic lodging in NYC?
   I want to plan for a short (3-4) days vacation in NYC and it's nearby cities (e.g., Jersey city). My plan is to travel with my wife and my little kids and I'll be driving from a nearby state (a few hours driving distance).

   Please give me your advice about cheap, yet safe and clean, areas (hotels) for lodging. I don't mind to stay a little far and use the subway if this will eventually be cheaper. What is the best way to visit some places in NJ? Which area is recommended to stay at in NJ?

     1st the subway doesn't go beyond NYC itself. There are other trains (PATH, NJ Transit, LIRR, and Metro North). They are more commuter lines and more expensive (except for PATH).

     With that being said, Jersey City is close to Manhattan and accessible via the PATH, however the hotels are not that much cheaper.

     If you want to save money you will have to stay a good distance away and the cost of NJ Transit (for yourself, your wife and kids) would probably make the issue a wash.

   So our family is finally going to NYC!!! Well, we went for 2 days during the summer but that wasn't nearly enough time so we're going back for Thanksgiving. We are soo excited and the kids especially to see the Macy's parade!

   But I am clueless about where to stay, what's the good/bad areas, etc.

   I would love some suggestions on nice hotels in the city. Close to Macy's close to the parade route so we can easily walk to see the parade. Nothing 5 star necessary, but something nice, clean, not completely out-of-date.

   Also, since there aren't really rooms available on the parade route (ok, except outrageously expensive rooms) we plan to walk to go see it...Any suggestions on the best spot to go? I would love to watch from Macy's since that's where all the "acts" perform. Any idea how early we should get there to secure a spot up front?

     your better off getting a hotel in brooklyn or queens. i mean subways intertwine all the boroughs except staten island so it shouldnt be hard to get to macys in the city. but if your not right infront of macys its just a cold stupid day cause thats where all the floats stop

   Best way to enter IT in middle age?
   After years in the meeting and hospitality industry, dealing more in audiovisuals in the pre-digital era, I want to get into IT as it applies to conferencing and meetings. But at its core, I want to get started in what ever aspects get me up and running the fastest. I am not lazy, but I am in my 50s, so I want to avoid starting from square one and having to get a bachelors degree in computer science. Most IT people seem ultra protective about how they got started, or how they got the job they are in now, and I suspect that is because they acquired the job through unorthodox means - meaning a friend of a friend, or that keeping it all mysterious is their job security. Seriously, the IT guys that show up when we have network problems are baby faced kids that either have a handheld instrument that tells them everything, or passwords to unlock diagnostics in the system that go to work helping the problem heal itself. Trying to talk to them is like the drive in kid at McDonalds - they have no savvy for anything but the specific duty on "the ticket" and another ticket has to be generated before they can lift a finger on anything else. They also think we non techs are dimwitted enough to be impressed and stonewalled if they can throw around BS terminology. Here in NYC, it almost seems like some of them are like actors being waiters - its a job they got to kick around until a good acting/modeling gig comes along. A buddy of theirs had hiring power, and here they are. I knew more about what TCPIP was, what cable went where, about firewalls, etc... he was trying to plug an analog cable in a RJ-11 network port, I wanted to ask him, "who's nephew are you?"

   I hear that certification in certain fields is more important than just taking coursework, but of course, you can't just walk in and take the test - or maybe you can? Their are self taught lawyers that walk in and take an LSAT So, is it possible to self teach with some huge books and take a Microsoft Certification course? I'm gearing it to technology as it affects meetings or educational technology because I'm hoping my 30+ years in the realm of these fields will count for something. But getting a handle on the big picture - especially being able to keep up with the techno-speak at industry conventions has been a monster!. I went to pro AV convention AVCOMM and was lost just trying to shoot the breeze, and once it looks like you are a lightweight, you get shunned from the hobnobbing circles. They want you working somewhere already in the key positions as a peer, and primarily want to get friendly only to use the contact to sell your company their products off your back.

   I said a lot, I know, but I need straight talk without the ulterior motive. I just escaped online college recruitment hell, a pit I fell into by answering ONE ad for DeVry, which I didnt know would lead to tons of solicitations and still couldn't get a clear answer on costs and scope of study and what career is best suited for a man my age. I'm a big boy, I can take it: Is this a young man's game? I dont have to be an instant manager, but let;'s face it - I am too old to be running around crawling on floors, patching cables along walls like I did in hotel AV staging in the 80s.

     Been in the computer biz for 25 years- Best place now is anything to do with the Internet. Security, programming or training. Take a very specific course, like Adobe Dreamweaver to get a skill that is usable or salable. Take course from some place that actually uses the program, not just to sell you a course for big bucks. College night course would be a good start and cheaper
     Then, check out web sites from your prior contacts and find the worst ones, where you could get paid to help out: or set up your own web sites to sell them something they need:) The advantage you have is you speak their language and understand their communication problems. A puppy will not have a clue- the 50 club is great:)

5. QUESTION:
   How long is the flight? (Not counting the lay-overs) and what should I do on the flight to entertain the kids?
   My kids get out of school on May 13th. And on May 14th, we will be traveling down to my parents beach house in Ocean City and go to the beach, the boardwalk (if it is open), do activities and go to Assateuge Island.

   On May 20th, my husband scheduled us a surprise flight to Hawaii. I thought we were going to Orlando this year but he said we will in October but this summer we will be in Hawaii.

   We will be flying from BWI (Baltimore is an awesome airport, but about 3 hours away from Ocean City but the best airport to be at in this case) to Hawaii (Maui). We will be stopping in New York City for a lay over and the next flight is 10 hours away. So we plan to take a trip to the Statue of Liberty (Which will be about 6 hours duration. Getting out of the airport, taxi, ferry, arrive, pictures, going inside, getting out, gift shop, saying good bye, ferry back, taxi back, then check in the airport and go to our gate) And then sleep for 2 hours coming back and eat something then wait and get boarded. In April, for our Spring Break, we went to NYC and did everything except the Statue. We went to Ellis Island, but not the Statue!

   Then from NYC we will be flying to Seattle. Then it is a 4 hour wait till our next flight so we will be taking a nap at the gate. Then we will fly from Seattle to Hawaii and that is a 6 hour flight. Then we will arrive at 10:00 am in the morning and get our lei and eat breakfast and check into our hotel and take a nap for the remainder of the afternoon and then spend our summer there.

   So here is our schedule:

   3 hour car ride from Ocean City to BWI.
   2 hour check in: Check in, Sercurity, Breakfast, Nap, and board then fly to NYC for 2 hours.
   Come in to NYC and have 10 hours of free time.
   6 hour flight to Seattle.
   Arrive in Seattle and nap for 4 hours.
   6 hour flight to Hawaii.
   Arrive.

   So I am traveling with 4 kids. An 8 year old, A 6 year old, A 4 year old, and 4 month year old. What should I do with them during that LONG LONG time? Activities? Especially on the flight? Please help!!
   Oh and we are traveling with 2 dogs. And they will be on the flight with us. What should we do to entertain them and what should we do when we are in the Statue of Liberty??

     The flight, I would imagine be a good 10-12 hours- just the flight added together. Those are a lot of breaks and a lot of time between them but in some cases it is good to use it to nap and eat something and in other cases it is good to do something during the time.

     2 dogs, I don't think it is a good idea to take it on the flight. Especially if you are going to go to the Statue of Liberty. I think you should keep them home where you live with a pet-sitter or a kennel or if you would like them to come, put them on a flight with no stops and when you arrive- you can pick them up. I have taken my dog before and I entertained her with a Kong Toy and put peanut butter in it and gave her a lot of treats so she can even her ears and I brought in little chew toys. But she was a different dog- she never barks or gets very crazy like other dogs.

     For your children, give them comfortable pillows and blankets so they could maybe take a nap during the flight or the lay overs. Give them coloring books and journals and papers and crayons and pencils. Then give them a DVD player with a ton of DVD's. Give them little crafts to do. Maybe you can let the older ones play on your laptops and all. Nintendo DS's, little video games, anything really.

   I wanted to show my gratitude to my best friend for something she recently did for me so 3 weeks ago I planned a 2 day girl getaway to NYC in about 2 months. I paid for a hotel and roundtrip transportation from the airport to our hotel and back and a broadway show (approx 0). The only thing she has to provide is her airline ticket which is about 5. She was ecstatic. Today she called me to say she told her sister about the trip and says her sister invited herself to join us.      It's 2,852 miles from Seattle to NYC. It's 1,571 miles from Dallas to NYC. Our tickets on American were 9 each, round trip from Dallas, TX. Food, activity tickets, taxi, subway, tips will cost 0 per person a day. That's without the hotel room and if you don't see a Broadway play. NYC is so fabulous that I'd love for your family to experience it, but I don't see how that's possible on ,500, even if you only eat from the street vendors.

   We are planning a last minute trip for this weekend...We can't decide if we should go to willliamsburg or lake George NY... We have been to williamsburg and we love it..there is a lot to do and we know the resort. It is 6 1/2 hrs from us... We have never been to lake George together on a family trip and never stayed at this hotel (Georgian resort). The only one benefit I see is that it is 3 1/2 hrs instead of 6. I went when I was a kid and I remember it as very crowed a city like environment, hotels really close together, kind of boring. My kids are 5 1/2 and 2 1/2. Please tell me your experience or which will be the best choice. Also I live in NYC so when I go away I really need the change of scenery.

     Here's my suggestion. How about Virginia Beach. The boardwalk is unique, the beach is great, if you want to visit Williamsburg it's only about 45 minutes away. The Virginia Aquarium is great for kids, especially the 5 year old. I've never been to Lake George, but from what I've heard its a lot like Gattlinburg, Tn; mainly a tourist trap. No offense intended. I just think the beach would be a better place for you to unwind and the kids have a good time. I stay at a place called Barclay Towers on the lower end of the boardwalk (barclaytowerstimeshare.com). They have a nice indoor pool and there's a kiddie play area on the beach out front. All units have balconies. Nice to relax on late in the evening with a drink.

    So, before I start, I will give some back ground, And in the end I just want to know what other people would do, and if I am acting rationally.

    I met Maria 7 years ago, when I was 15. We lived in the same city, and were a part of the same religion. Unfortunately for us, it was a fundamentalist church, which ruined most of our childhoods. We had everything in common, and despite all the rules, fell in love around 16 or so. It was young love, puppy love, innocent. To me, the most beautiful thing in the world. In the end It was stripped from us and I was shunned from the religion. I was beyond furious that they could do such a horrible thing to stop 2 kids from having a puppy love romance. (which, is a normal part of human development, I mean we aren't just born knowing how to have good relationships). In the end, I was invited back into the religion 6 months later, but instead I gave all of them a giant "GFY!!!" and moved to california with a friend. Ever since, I have been on my own with my own new life, but still maintained contact with maria, on more of a long distance on/off relationship. We love each other still, and it will never change, I mean she is my best friend, but life goes on.

    Just under 2 years ago, I met angela. We started dating and eventually she moved in with me. I still live in Cali, and have had my life/schooling here for a while. Recently, I was presented with a business opportunity for a 2 week grant in NYC. I was thrilled at the opportunity for extra work, but also at the possibility of being able to see Maria for the first time in 7 years. I took off for the trip,and was unable to get a hold of maria. During my work trip, the first I have taken since I started dating angela, she became immensely resentful, and clingy for me going. (she has no clue about maria).       Despite the many trials during the course of the time condensed here I would call that living wild, and having fun!
      To the point, though, I don't want any of the following to offend you or her later on in any way, so please read it as advice and not as something meant to hurt any-ones feelings.
      Every one has there own way of reaching success, and happiness.
      In your 'flings' case, it may be sleeping around. For you it seems to be commitment and honesty.
      IMO not only does she sleep around for successes sake, but to feel loved, and real, and meaningful, as well. That thing she said about sleeping with relatives is a significant sign of her love - sex connection. To continue your current life style, and to continue feeding hers, keep living wild, and loving her.
      To live happily yourself (as far as i know) you need to move on, and find a woman who is looking for some of the same major things you are. You sound like a good guy, lacking a little confidence (and knowledge of the shift button:). If you ready to move on from a woman you handle dealing with because she shows you a little sideshow of your true importance, then do so. All along, as you do, you will question is she using me for me?
      You can even try to take things to a deeper level. If your ready, in your own words, tell her that you only want her, and that you only want her to want you.

    James Ridger and Michelle Michelson are best friends in a small-town high school. They are both very into musical theatre, and they both aspire to leave the small town and be on Broadway- together, but just as friends. Then, they fall in love with eachother and start dating Romeo-and-Juliet style; really infatuated and really serious. After a few months, another girl, Mandy lures James away from Michelle, leaving her heartbroken and miserable.

    Eight years later, James is still living in that same small town, where he is engaged to Mandy. He hasn't spoken to Michelle since they broke up. James persuades Mandy, who hates theatre, to travel to NYC with him to see a Broadway musical. Once there, James recognizes the leading lady as Michelle. After the show, Michelle sees him in the lobby and rushes to say hello. She and James catch up for a few minutes, and James discovered that she has played major roles in several popular musicals in the past eight years, and also meets her fiance- the gorgeous French dansuer, Jean. He remembers what they talked about when they were kids, and realizes that Michelle is living their dream. After Michelle leaves with Jean, Mandy snaps at James and drags him back to their hotel- with James thinking about nothing but Michelle and full of regret.

      It's a great plot, and also movie worthy. I can definitely see it as a movie concept. The story seems to have a lot of room for character development, which I personally like in stories. If you keep the story up, then most surely you'll have a fabulous ending result. Good luck!
