     It's not necessarily "illegal content." A lot of these sites pay content providers to give them access to use this content. They typically link back to the site where they got it from and that gives that site even more clout in the search engine rankings (so it doesn't hurt them).

     As far as using information from these sites... usually I find the interfaces of the original sites more user friendly, but if the site is appealing and easy to use, I don't feel any need to change sites.

     Furthermore, if I'm not clicking on any of their sponsored links, I am really only costing them their bandwidth so there is really no reason to find the original if you already found it somewhere else... You'll just end up using their bandwidth and giving them nothing in many cases.

   I work for a small nonprofit that has a website and our email accounts tied together through Yahoo Small Business. Apparently they shut us down for violating their Terms of Service.      The domain name "online-dataentry.com" has a masked "whois" database entry, and the ip address I get (216.39.57.107) doesn't return anthing from a reverse dns lookup, so the ip address is not dedicated.

     The "Terms of Use" appears to be a boilerplate document, with references to online shopping, but includes a Warranty Disclaimer section that says, effectively, that all warranties are no good on the site. Try a web search for "online-dataentry.com scam".

     They claim to have been in business for 5 years,. That must mean that the scam alerts from 2006 are still good.

     That's enough warning signs for me.

    Web Hosting - What do I need?
    I bought a domain name and am almost ready to put up my own web site. I need someplace to host that will:

    1. Be super, super cheap.
    2. Allow me to use Google Adsense (I doubt I'll make any real money, but why not try?)
    3. I need only about 10 megs of space forthe whole site.

      Their FTP interface is very easy to use, basically drag-and-drop.

    I've been to about 15 - 20 websites that are pure garbage and crap. I'm looking for a site that hosts audio files like photobucket hosts images.

      most of the free hosting service have a "add banner" (advertisement linked in your site) and you can't get a free domain name, you only get a free hosting and subdomain, I know one free hosting without advertisements added to your site is http://www.50webs.com it's pretty good enough, and you get a free email too, all you have to do is create go to the site and create your account, when you sign up make sure to choose the option below

      You need to have a hosting provider that supports piece of technology called "FONTPAGE EXTENTION" about 80% of the providers do support them.

      Any way if do want to use it on your FREE hosting providers then, I'll try to give you step by step direction how to by pass frontpage please read carefully:

      Assuming all your pages are created and saved on your hard disc. You can use two methods. 1. FTP transfer 2. Use your hosting provider's online flie Creator or transfer.

      First FTP, This probaly the best and simplest way of uploading your Pages to your hosting server. However not many FREE hosting provider supports this.     I have created a couple web pages with a company that has an online interface. For a novice like me it was nice in that it is close to Photoshop and you don't need to know code...it does all of that for you and changes can be made real time.

    Question about HTML forms?
    I'm a little confused about forms here. I have a site with crappy free hosting that is basically a bridge to keep my business going until I get a real domain registered with good hosting.

    I need to make a form for one of the pages. Nothing fancy. I've got it all designed, with all the text fields and radio buttons and stuff in place, but the "submit" input is killing me here. What I want is just for the information entered into the form inputs above to be sent to a specific email address. I thought that the "form action="mailto:xxx" thing would do that, but instead it caused my email client to pop up with the form information composed in an email, ready to send to that address. That kind of defeats the purpose of a form in my opinion.

    Is there any way to do this simply? I don't want to rely on my web host or any third-party form generator websites that will limit my number of submissions and/or display advertising.

      Free web sites do not normally allow use of SMTP! Your current hosting package MUST allow SMTP to work. Otherwise, no email can be sent.

      A client-side form will always rely on the person clicking the submit button as it brings up their own email program which they then have to click Send on that program. Less secure also.

      If you can not get SMTP set up, then there is no need to use a server-side form. As it stands, you will have to rely on third part form processing if you want to use it on a free site which does not allow SMTP.

    Help! All of my WordPress links are broken after I moved WordPress!?
    Hear me out; this is a bit different from most of the threads I've found online where people didn't export/import their database properly or update their permalinks.

    The site I am building resides on Yahoo! Web Hosting, and the task at hand was to move a WordPress installation from the development site where I was building it over to the real domain on Yahoo! I did a WordPress export from the old blog's location, manually installed WordPress at the root level of the site's real domain, and imported the pages and posts.

    I ALSO created a database and a database user with the right priveleges, and I know this worked because I was able to do the manual installation process of WordPress, and it talked to the database and was granted access. The import of the old WordPress installation also went off without a hitch, and all of my pages and posts exist in the new WordPress Dashboard just as they should.

    HERE'S THE CATCH: The only page showing up is the home page! I reset my permalink settings and they appear correctly when I'm editing one of the pages in the Dashboard, leading me to believe the database writing is functioning properly, but if I try to "view page" "view post", navigate to, or directly enter the URL of any page that isn't the home page, I get a 404.

    PLEASE HELP!! What am I doing wrong??
    UPDATE: After a lot of troubleshooting and trying different things, I discovered that the problem with trying to install WordPress at the root level of a Yahoo hosted website is that Yahoo doesn't allow you to upload a .htaccess file, which is required for the use of custom permalinks.

    It would work if I were to keep the "ugly" WordPress permalinks, but that is useless to me because I need to have SEO-optimized websites.

    Thanks for replies re Geocities. Don't really think that's what I'm looking for.

    To summarise.
    Have created 7 page web site in Publisher. (Went on course and am really pleased with it - only trouble is the course didn't tell you how to 'launch' it).

    Have bought a domain name

    Have bought idiot-proof guide to publishing my web site

    The author didn't have me in mind!

    I have saved my pages as web pages and put in a folder ready for blast-off.

    Now my book tells me to contact my ISP, (BT, who I know provide enought free server space for hosting our site)requesting the necessary info to upload the web pages to a web server.

    Now here's where the real idiot shines through..
    my ISP is BT but HOW do I contact them to ask this question. Do I phone them? Do I send them a little note? If so, how. I can't find anywhere to do this - just FAQ's etc.

    That would be a start.

    Oh and also, I don't want someone's advertising on my website.

    has anyone made a real business website with wordpress or sitebuilder?

    When I say real business, I mean more, no blogging website, a website that is offering lot of products to sell, with photos and descriptions and links to other pages on the site based on specific product category, etc. etc.

    I feel wordpress and sitebuilder leans more towards businesses (regarding templates and what is offered on the templates), that are like for Physician, Lawyer, bloggers....nothing for a business that is selling multiple items.

    If anyone has a business similiar to what I would like to do or knows how to make a website like I would like on wordpress or sitebuilder, please let me know how. I am having a tough time. I have a domain name and a web hosting plan already - just need to make the website now.

    1-I am creating big sites and I wanna add a search engine, I don't wanna google cse, I know how to create a search engine, however I don't know how to make the form secure and how to add the page automatically to the database, because I don't want to add them manually.

    2- I have a newsletter form how to secure it (99.9) I mean how does facebook and youtube...secure their form? Is mysql_real_escape_string so secure? A top contributor told me that it introduce other problems and that he uses the simple strings that are usually used such as ", ', but I want mt newsletter form to be fully secure (as much as possible)

    You know I use about 30 sql injection and they work on big sites (universities, web hosting sites and business sites...I tried them trust me) what I'm trying to say is that even big companies have troubles to defend against some of the simplest form of sql injection, there are 180 sql injections, so every time I try to create a dynamic site or even a simple form, I am afraid of someone trying to hack me, so I stick with static pages, and now I'm creating big sites and I have people working with me so I have to get passed my worst fears, but I can't because I used to hack people and i know how easy it is to hack sites, so my main concern is security.

    And my final Q, if you create your own language (like fbml for facebook) and you kept that language secret and you didn't teach anyone how it works would somebody be able to hack you?

      1) The usual way is you write a program that loops through all the directories and files in your web site. For each one, it checks when the file was last modified and checks when the file was last indexed. If it was modified since it was indexed, it re-indexes it.

      2) The best way is to only allow things that are known to be safe. Rather than trying to figure out everything that might be dangerous and filter it out, just allow through only things you know are safe.

      3) Creating your own language won't make you any more secure. First, you're likely to make all the mistakes people make when they create and implement a language -- you'll lose the benefit of everyone else's work. Second, you will either have to make it deliberately obscure (which will slow down all of your development) or you will have to make it logical and sane (which will enable others to figure it out easily).

    Regarding digital distribution, specifically Japanese animation (involves a specific situation, please read)?
    Here's the extent of my knowledge - It is illegal to digitally distribute intellectual property without the expressed written permission of the parties holding the legal rights to that property. It is also illegal to distribute property from other countries, in this case Japan, due to International Copyright Law.

    Now, for the specific situation:

    On October 13th, a web site called animesfree.com posted that they had just been delivered a notice from his web host stating that FUNimation (an anime localising, licensing, and distributing company in the US) served them a DMCA notice and that they had 24 hours to comply and remove all FUNi content (of which there seems to have been 44 different titles available on the site at the time). Of course the whole situation is incredibly silly, if you see the post about it on their front page, but what I really want to know about is the real legality of things, seeing as how they have a "Legal" page. That page states,

    "Animes Free does not host or endorse any of the videos seen on this website. We are a community which embeds videos from popular video sharing websites for community use, much like the way Google indexes websites on their search engine. There are no videos hosted on our servers and we do not take responsibility for the content.

    Any complaints or inquiries should be sent to the party responsible for hosting these videos, and not us. Contact references regarding legal issues will be re-directed to this page."

    While this would APPEAR pretty clear and reasonable, somehow I think this little loophole just doesn't really work this way. They say they do not endorse the videos seen on their site, but then if they don't then why are the videos even there? Isn't that endorsement? And wouldn't this situation be similar to that of Pirate Bay, where files were only directed to and not hosted, and yet the legal hammer came down on them anyway?

    If you have any sort of insight or other resources, this has been a very interesting situation to me, and I think it would be interesting for others who might visit anime streaming sites or host similar sites.

    In addition, perhaps this would have been a decent topic in discussion in the "animation" subsection, however my question is of a legal issue, not exactly an animation issue.

      It doesn't work that way. Look at how Napster got shut down. They were doing the same thing, just linking different people who shared their own files. They didn't host them on servers or anything like that. They still got slammed by the law.

      If the website works on one computer, then it's clear that it's not a problem at the webhost end. I just checked it out, and it loaded on my end (yes it's a bit slow, but loaded after around 30 seconds).

      Have you removed all temporary internet files?
