QUESTION:
What is the best OS to use on my server? I plan on hosting web, shoutcast, and various game servers.?
The server is very powerful. 8gb ram (8 X 1gb sticks) 2X dual core AMD Opterons, and a 300gb SCSI hard drive. I plan on running a DNS server, apache/php/sql/etc. for web hosting, and several game servers, such as Counter-Strike: Source, Natural Selection 2 (when it's released), Quake 4, Garry's Mod, and many others. I am having a little trouble trying to determine which OS to use, and I plan on hosting for other people so maybe Virtual Servers hosted on it. I have Ubuntu on it, but have been recommended CentOS and FreeBSD.-
ANSWER:
The most services built in: Linux
The cheapest: Linux
The most up-time: Linux
Easiest to expand to a cluster: Linux
Easiest to expand to bigger boxes (including mainframe): LinuxSo, overall, I'd say Linux.

QUESTION:
What are the UK Copyright Laws for broadcasting Online Radio?
My friend and I are desperate to start our own radio station but are unsure about the copyright laws. We're not even in Sixth Form yet and this is our Summer Project. I've set up a shoutcast that's broadcasting through a free shoutcast hosting server and I wanted to start playing songs instead of just 'talk radio', but am I allowed to do this without paying some kind of license to the record companies? If so, how would I go about this and how much would it cost? What if I have already legally bought the CD?

QUESTION:
Does a radio hosting and website hosting exist?
I need a hosting that is a shoutcast server and a webserver.-
ANSWER:
If your budget is not restricted, I recommend getting Centovacast (www.centova.com/pages/cast) and installing it on a rented dedicated server. The installation steps are a little bit involved so it's best to sign up with a fully managed provider. Fully managed providers will configure and secure the shoutcast server so all you need to do is upload your music.Feel free to get in touch if you have any question or comment.
Cheers!

QUESTION:
i need a server with enough space to host like 5 or 10 web sites and like 5 or 10 shoutcast accounts?
i need a server with enough space to host like 5 or 10 web sites and like 5 or 10 shoutcast accounts where can i get one cheap?-
ANSWER:
I can't believe people are recommending you a shared host like Bluehost...you definitely need VPS or dedicated hosting, especially considering the shoutcast accounts. In fact, you might wanna go with dedicated hosting right away. Shared hosting (BH, iPage, Fatcow, Greenville, etc.) will be too slow and cause search engine ranking issues as you won't have a dedicated IP.I've tested a ton of dedicated/VPS hosts over the years, and now stick to a few because imo they are the best. Just do as I do and pick the one that currently has the best coupon, or if you want PREMIUM service and quality...go with LiquidWeb. I tend to check out some guy's Twitter stream whenever I'm looking for hosting coupons, he updates the stream daily, and I always got the best offers: http://twitter.com/#!/WebHostingD
As for the hosts...
VPS hosting:
myHosting (cheapest VPS host, I'm with them @ only 52c/day...you get up to 6mo free!): http://bit.ly/gG9DSh
Inmotion hosting (very reliable, easy to upgrade to dedicated if needed): http://bit.ly/fZdpdL
Liquidweb hosting (hands down the best support and servers...I'd go for them if I were to try VPS as they feature cloud hosting features with their VPS service that bring a speed increase): http://bit.ly/idpC0uDedicated hosting:
Liquidweb (best support, incredibly fast servers...been with them for a while now after testing about 5-6 dedicated hosts...this is hands down the best imo): http://bit.ly/idpC0u
Inmotion hosting: http://bit.ly/dGGnuu
Liquidweb: http://bit.ly/idpC0u
HostRocket (cheapest dedicated host starting at .99/mo): http://bit.ly/i2kpPhI don't know how web-savvy you are...but either way, with several pages and shoutcast accounts I would pick the host with the best support. You will eventually run into problems no matter which host you pick, and good support will save you a ton of sleepless nights. For my most important websites, I host with Liquid Web as they're support is far above anything else I ran into over the past 10-12 years. They will even migrate your existing websites for FREE! Saved me a ton of work

QUESTION:
Internet Radio on a Remote Host?
I'm trying to set up a radio station to commentate on my local football clubs live matches.I have a remote host and want to upload the necessary software to that to use it as a streaming server but don't know what to use.
The server is a remote host, not physically available to me, so things like shoutcast and icecast don't seem to be right. I also don't want to sign up to live365 etc.
I've seen webhosting companies offering shoutcast streaming hosts so how can I do something like that?
-
ANSWER:
Realistically if you are unable to install shoutcast or Icecast then you are unlikely to be able to find a suitable solution for your current host.I appreciate you do not want to pay for a streaming service, but my recommendation is to do just that, and there are many low cost solutions around. Shoutcast is suitable for speech, accessible on most platforms and often slightly cheaper than Windows Media. Windows Media can give better audio quality at a lower bandwidth though.
To stream the audio to the server I suggest using Simplecast ( http://www.spacialaudio.com/products/simplecast/ ) or OddCast ( http://www.oddsock.org/tools/ ) as these are the easiest to set up.
Finally you could consider using the free Talkshoe ( http://www.talkshoe.com ) that sounds ideal for what you are wanting to do.

QUESTION:
Building up an internet radio.?
I would like to host my internet radio to a server , so people could listen it 14 hours a day without to stay all the time my computer running on shoutcast. What i would like is to upload my music files to my web host and start the radio . I would like to know how to do that.....-
ANSWER:
And you would get shut down in a very short time! You need licenses to do it and for the copyright material. You will be liable for royalties as well. I suggest you should look into the legalities first and what your liable for and what your legal obligations are.I'm afraid it's not one of those wake up in the morning ideas and think I'll do that this afternoon. Doesn't work like that because it's public broadcasting to an audience..
