      When you create your website with Yahoo and get a domain name with Go Daddy, all you need to do is go into your domain control panel in Go Daddy and change the domain name server (dns) to make your domain name point to Yahoo's web server.

      When you perform that action, it's free. But if you're transferring your domain name from one company to another company, then the transfer will cost you money.

      For example, let's say you want to transfer your domain name from Go Daddy to Yahoo, then Yahoo will charge you for the transfer. After the transfer, your domain name will be hosted with Yahoo, not Go Daddy anymore.

      But if you're simply pointing the domain name from Go Daddy to Yahoo's web server (or web space), then you won't have to pay a dime. In this case, your domain name is still hosting with Go Daddy, so any other changes in settings you want to make with your domain name, you still need to access your Go Daddy's domain control panel.

      Transferring and pointing domain name are two different things.

      I had two sites hosted at Yahoo for about a week and a half. I had to go somewhere else because one of my scripts would not run on their set up. The thing about Yahoo is that you're dealing with…well Yahoo. The Yahoo environment is proprietary and is not the same as other web hosts using Cpanel, Plesk or DirectAdmin.

      It is designed for business owners that may not be that Web savvy. The accent is on reliability not on the most advanced features. In fact, the Yahoo set up does not support all of the PHP functions or all the Perl libraries for that matter. Dealing with the customer support at Yahoo can be extremely frustrating. I can tell you this from personal experience.

      If you are concerned about being able to pay the monthly charge at Yahoo you are looking in the wrong place. My understanding is that they will freeze your account for a week or two if you miss a payment and then they will delete it. There are way too many web hosts willing to give you tons of space and bandwidth for a couple dollars a month. But, beware that the best deal in web hosting is not the cheapest price!

      Getting your site listed in the search engines is really not that difficult. The best way is to not use any submission service at all. My advice is to set up some links to your site from other websites and let the search engines find you on their own. You can do this by making posts at bulletin boards or other public sites.

      If you have any decent content it won't be long before your site has bots crawling all over it. This will often give you a higher listing than if you submit a site directly to the search engine.

    Hi, as you Yahoo users might know, the free Yahoo Geocities accounts are being deleted in October. I've had my website running in some form since 1999, and I'd hate to have it reduced to nothing.       If you're only loading static pages, you may be okay with Yahoo Web Hosting, but forget it if you use dynamic content with a database. (I believe this includes all of the popular blogging tools.)

      I recently set up a PHP/MySQL site on yahoo hosting, and through Google Analytics discovered a few weeks ago that my traffic had dropped considerably for no apparent reason. When I went to my site, I got a message (built into the open source CMS I use) saying that the site couldn't connect to the database.

      I spent an hour or so on hold to reach a rep by phone, and the rep was courteous, etc. After some research, the rep told me there were others reporting this problem, and the cause was the web servers not connecting with the database servers. They sent a follow up email a day or so later saying the problem was fixed, blah blah, but it wasn't. I had to send a couple of messages back and forth to convince them the problem was still present, explaining that I had set up Google Analytics to log the error message.

      After a few days the problem disappeared for a week or so, but now is back with a vengeance. Now it takes longer for the error to appear on-screen, sometimes a couple of minutes, meaning most visitors won't even stick around long enough for my error message to appear.

      I'm shopping around for a new provider.
