  3. QUESTION:
In URL, Why do people call a part of servers host names?
ex) URL = protocol + host name + path + file name
    http://www.yahoo.com/news/index.html
    -----------------------
    host name? domain name?

the term host name and domain name is used exchangely.
but many people defined URL by using term host name, not domain name.
If I use the term domain names, the define of URL is incorrect?

    • ANSWER:
I have explaied this to you a few times but you don't seem to understand.
In your example the protocol is http as in hyper text transfer protocol as opposed to ftp or file transfer protocol. A host name can be the name of your local machine or device attached to it. A domain name can sometimes be called a host name.
It would help us to answer you accurately if explained why you want to know, as in how do you wish to apply this? You can edit the is question instead of posting again. Also, check here:

  6. QUESTION:
I just purchased my URL and Web hosting, please give me tips on setting it up.?
I purchased my domain name and hosting services yesterday. They said the URL is propagating and that it will take a few days. How do i know when it's done? Can I keep trying to get to the site and if it works then will I know it's done?

Also, I created an email account for my website. Can I use Outlook to view the emails or do I need the service provider's email client?

    Thank you.

    • ANSWER:
Domain Name Service (DNS) is what 'resolves' your domain to your site's IP address; a computer needs this address to access your server. However, since there is no 'central server' for the internet (it's made up of millions of computers connected to each other), you have to wait for the 'root DNS' servers to get the updated record (for your site). This usually only takes a few hours but can take up to 24-48 hours. You are correct, you will know that it has been propagated when you can see the site.

As far as Outlook, you will need to know what protocols are enabled for their email server. If they are using POP/IMAP for example, you may use Outlook to access this server. However, email also relies on DNS records, so if you can't access the website, odds are you won't be able to access email either.

  7. QUESTION:
what is the best free domain hosting service?
I'm looking for one that has no downtime and url forwarding. And possibly no ads if I did ever plan to develop the site. If not free then what other web hosting service provides said benefits for a low cost and maybe has unlimited domain names.

    • ANSWER:
I recommend one of these: http://www.webhostingtable.com/

Powweb has the best offer right now. It's on a 50% sale - .88/month (.56/year), and you get a free domain (like www.yourwebsite.com) from them.

Their hosting plan includes web builder, so you can create your site just by drag and drop (without any programming), or you could install WordPress (easy, one click install from their control panel), choose a theme that you like, and start adding content.

  8. QUESTION:
How do I mask my website url, so that it just shows my domain name and not the url of my host?
I'd like to have my website to just show my domain name instead of the host's url

    • ANSWER:
Configure your proxy at internet options

  9. QUESTION:
If I buy a yahoo domain name can I upload my site to that url or do I need to have a web hosting account?
I just want to get a website up and dont' know if I need just the domain name or a web host account as well.

    • ANSWER:
You will need a hosting service as well. You can get hosting as little as 4usd a month. The domain name is the pointer/address that is the name for your web site.

Who ever you buy your domain name from probably will have hosing service as well. It will be easier to buy the hosing and domanin name from the same place or you will have to transfer your domain name to your hosing company.

  10. QUESTION:
    domain name and URL help?
I recently purchased a domain name, but I don't have the money to spend on hosting every month at least for now, so for the time being I am using a free host (1stfreehosting.com)

The URL redirects to my site, I have no problem with that, but if I click on links to other pages it displays my website address (username.1stfreehosting.com)

Is there any way to mask it? Im using the site for semi business purposes. Alternatively, if I purchase web space, does it have to be with the same company I registered my domain with to work?
I want my URL's to be like: http://username.com/page1.html
I've had a website before years ago and I brought a domain and hosting together but It was a long time ago and now I don't remember.

Wierd question, I know, but looks unprofessional having free webspace even though there are no ads. Shouldn't really be complaining but I was just wondering if some teched up person could help me ;)
    *edit*

I have a layout, a place to host, and a domain name. What im concerned with changing is the URL - I want it www.namehere.com/index.html

Not simply forwarding to my existing site

    • ANSWER:
Check out www.webhostingtalk.com -- there are a lot of commercial hosts there but also some places that will give you 100% free hosting as long as your site doesn't eat up an outrageous amount of bandwidth (ie. more than 50 gigs a month) or just hammer the MySQL servers.

  11. QUESTION:

I am 14 years old and I want to buy a domain (website) on the internet. I have a sub-domain that is free but it might get shut down but I already have the knowledge of how to do most of it. I was wondering the best sites to buy from that are cheap that I pay monthly and can host sub-domains from. And can somebody please tell me the differance between a domain name and website hosting?
is the domain name the url and website hosting all the pages you add to it? thanks.

    • ANSWER:
If you want to pay monthly I recommend
      Godaddy Deluxe plan
      http://www.hosttell.com/godaddy

      Disk space: 150 GB
      Bandwidth: 1500 GB

      Price: .99 (for monthly payments)

  12. QUESTION:

  13. QUESTION:
i've just purchased a domain name and have free hosting with virgin media. how do i get my url to work?

    • ANSWER:
Okay, to have your domain name point to your Virgin free hosting you will need to have the domain name registrar create a CNAME entry (you may be able to do this yourself in the domain control panel depending upon the registrar).

You should look at http://www.virgin.net/helpme/freespace/top10/3.html for information on domain name usage with Virgin free hosting.

  14. QUESTION:
What does a free domain in a web hosting package means?
I bought a web hosting package that include a free domain. During the buying process I was requested to insert a domain name which I assume was the primary domain name for my web hosting (the free domain that was include in the package). After the payment have been made, I received an email on the details of my web hosting which include cpanel account info but it was a temporary webpage URL and temporary cpanel account using IP address. I was also informed that my URL (the supposed domain name that I inserted earlier) will only be visible once my DNS has been propagated (1 - 4 days). But after a week I still can't access my website using the actual domain name. I can still access the temporary page though.
This is my first time buying a web hosting. So was a bit confused not knowing what to do. Do I have to register my domain name? That would mean additional cost. So what does the free domain included in the package really means? What should I do in order for me to access the website with the actual domain name? Thank u.

    • ANSWER:
They should send you a 2 links the first one is the control panel for your web (cpanel, how to upload your web to the server etc) and the second is info on DNS to manage on webhost and you have to put DNS (which is the number) in. To direct your web to the host. If you don't know how to do it you should contact your web supporter.

  20. QUESTION:
How to get WordPress Blog into a separate URL?
I want to have 2 or 3 different wordpress based blogs hosted under one account. I already have several domain names and a host and have already installed WP blogs into separate folders through FTP.

But, what I need to know how to have the domain URL point straight to the blog without having to move files into the root directory. If domain name is 123blog.com, i want it to go straight to the Blog instead of having 123blog.com/blog/ in the URL.

    • ANSWER:
You can have as many WordPress blogs installed under one hosting account as you want as long as they are all installed in separate folders and have separate SQL databases installed for each WordPress blog. It sounds like you have done this correctly.

WordPress should be installed to the root of each of these new folders you created. If you install WordPress to a subfolder like exampleblog1.com/blog then you have just unnecessarily added another subfolder that you didn't need to add, unless of course you want to install 2 blogs under the root of one domain. In that scenario you would be using one WordPress installation as a main site and then the other WordPress installation would be a designated blog site under the main site.

On the root of your domain / website you want to create these folders and then install WordPress separately into each folder. This is the best structure and naming convention to avoid name resolution problems and many other problems.

      exampleblog1.com
      exampleblog2.com
      exampleblog3.com

Before I answer the question, as I understand it, I want to point this out. There are a couple of different ways to set up your WordPress blog. The default state of your WordPress blog is to have all your latest posts posted to your blog home page in typical blog fashion ie most current post is posted at the top, next oldest post is below, next post, etc. An alternative WordPress blog setup is to have a your home page be a static page. Which then means you can designate another page as your "official" blog page on your website. The practical use for this setup method is when you want your Home page to have content on it that you want to pretty much stay consistently the same instead of having all your latest posts posted on your home page.

      Ok so now the answer:

Click on your Settings Panel in your WordPress Blog.
      Click on General.
You will see these 2 setting options:
      WordPress address (URL)
Blog address (URL) Enter the address here if you want your blog homepage to be different from the directory you installed WordPress.

This gives you the option to designate a different blog homepage besides the default root of your website and which is going to also be your homepage. If you see exampleblog1.com/blog as your URLs under your general settings this means that you installed WordPress to the exampleblog1.com/blog folder and not the root folder, which would not have /blog on the end of the URL. If this is the case I recommend that you move your WordPress blog by following these instructions >>> http://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress >>> it is quick and easy to do. Unless of course you intend to have a main WordPress website and then another WordPress website under that main site acting as a separate blog. An example of this scenario can be seen on my website >>> http://www.ait-pro.com/ My main WordPress website has another WordPress installation under a subfolder called /aitpro-blog. I wanted to have my main site not look and act like a typical WordPress blog and wanted my blog to look and act completely like a WordPress blog. Both sites look visually identical so to a visitor they cannot tell that they are actually switching between two different WordPress sites - you get the best of all worlds using this method. In contrast you can have a WordPress blog not look like a blog at all and even hide the designated blog posting page like I did here (I used the Exclude pages from Navigation WordPress plugin) >>> http://www.visionsign.net/vision/

So let's say you want to set up your Home page as a static page, which in your case you may or may not want or decide to do. You would then create a new blog page or designate an existing page on your website to be the designated "official" blog page instead of the home page.

To setup up a static home page (Front Page) and a designated Blog page (Posts Page)
      Click on your Settings panel.
      Click on Reading.
      You will see these options.
Front page displays either your latest posts option or a static page.
Then you just choose whatever page you want as your Front page and whatever page you want as your Posts page.

Hopefully I answered your question and maybe gave you some more ideas and options to think about. One thing I would like to impress on you is that it is better to set things up optimally right from the very beginning, otherwise you could end up costing yourself a lot of time if you end up having to redesign your WordPress blog later on. Good luck!

  21. QUESTION:
How do I find the host name of my web hosting service (angelfire.com)?
How do I find the host name of my web hosting service (angelfire.com)? I have an HTML style web that i'm trying to upload to my domain hosted by angelfire.com but I don't know what the host name URL thing is for angelfire. I do have a working FTP client. 22. QUESTION:
If I turn on URL forwarding for my domain name, will I still still recieve my pop3 email that is sent?
I have email addresses set up with my hosting company already. Now I want to enable URL forwarding for this particular domain name so that web users get redirected. But if I enable URL forwarding, will that mean I will stop getting my POP3 email at my old addresses for that domain?

    • ANSWER:
Forwarding the url does not affect receiving pop3 emails at the old address. Email is handled separately from the domain hosting. It makes use of an MX record. No changes are necessary if the email remains with your domain.

  23. QUESTION:
How do I redirect a domain name to my Twitter profile URL?
I recently acquired a domain name from a domain name registry. At present it is not hosted by a domain hosting service.

I was wondering if it was possible to redirect the domain name so that those who visit the domain are redirected to my Twitter profile (i.e. http://twitter.com/username). Is this in fact possible given the scenario above or do I need to first activate the domain by having it hosted by a service provider? If it is possible, how do I go about redirecting the URL?

  24. QUESTION:
How DO websites and domain names work?
I am very bad with technical terms so in SIMPLETON LANGUAGE explain...

am i right in thinking that people tell servers to go and "squat" on a domain name, like cake.com and as long as their server is there, no one else can squat on it. - to get the domain for myself, I have to pay a company that hosts websites on domains, and the individual squatting to give the Url to the said company?

    • ANSWER:
Hmm. Let's see if I can explain it enough.

Once you acquire a domain name, basically, it's just a domain name. That domain name doesn't know where to connect.

So, DNS or Domain Name System comes to the rescue. DNS give the domain name a place where the domain name should connect. If the DNS is in Yahoo then the domain name, Yahoo.com or .net would connect to the DNS of Yahoo.

DNS has nameservers which is responsible for the connection of the domain name. The structure is ns1.domain.com or ns2.domain.com or something like that.

To sum this all up, let me give you a concrete example of a mother and child. Mother is the DNS and child is the domain name. When the mother is separated from the child, the child would think where his/her mother is. So, the child would look and look until the mother is found. Just like the domain name and DNS. If you don't have a DNS, the domain name would never know where to connect.

  25. QUESTION:
how to register domain name and only use it to redirect to another url?

    • ANSWER:
You don't need to pay for web hosting service. Just register a domain name.

we purchased a .com URL from a service provider but we are totally not satisfied with his hosting service.. his service continues to be very poor.. he is giving lot of head ache to us by not providing proper answers to our queries and his server is often down... we do not know what to do as we already registered our domain with him... is it possible to change the service provider without changing our domain name?

    • ANSWER:
Yes it is possible. If you registered your domain within the past 60 days you will not be able to move the domain to a new registrar; however, all you need to do is change the nameservers of the domain to point to whatever new hosts servers you choose. ie change

      ns1.crappyhost.com
      ns2.crappyhost.com

      to

      ns1.newhost.com
      ns2.newhost.com

There are other measures you must take to minimize the amount of downtime your site experiences during transfer and propogation.

  30. QUESTION:
using WordPress.com can you have your own url (domain name)?
Or do you need to install on a host?

    • ANSWER:
You can use WordPress.com's "domain mapping" function to set up a domain name to point to your WordPress.com-hosted blog. They have 2 options, one cheaper one if you already own a domain name, the other more expensive package for those who do not yet have a domain name (the latter includes both the domain name registration fee and the "mapping" fee).

It's all explained in the help section of the WordPress.com site. I've linked to the relevant page as the source.

  32. QUESTION:
What is the problem with my website. I got a starter hosting package plus domain name and made the home page.?
What is the problem with my website. I got a starter hosting package plus domain name and made the home page but when I write the URL http://codeexplained.com it shows me some messages about security certificates and asks me to log in using the username and password which the hosting company provided me. Also I sent the URLs to my friends and they say that the site shows only the text but not the pictures. Why?
It is not a free package. I have paid for it and the src in the img tag is also correct that is becuase when the page asks for my username and password that the host has provided me for the administration when entered then those pictures are shown but if I just cancel the dialog box that demands for the username and password then only the text is shown on the page.

    • ANSWER:
you may also not be using the correct src for the image

    Free web hosting/domain?
I'm going to be making a web site for somebody and I have to do it without it costing anything. I know of free web hosting from Angelfire and Geocities, but I really would like something that doesn't have any pop-ups, addbanners, or long URL names. I also know how to turn my computer into a web server, but I'de really rather not. I'de like to have a decent amount of webspace, PHP & CGI capabilities, no pop-ups/ad-banners, short URL name, no file-size limit, and a high data transfer limit. Does anybody have any recommendations?

Free Domain name for my Project and what's Web Hosting?
I searched it on many sites they all say its free but when signing up you have to pay little bit.(i really don't own a credit card, so paying is out of the question) So i need this domain name for educational purposes.(for my PHP intranet project) Please does any one know where i can get a free domain name?

And some sites say that they will do the hosting and give a domain name. what does that mean? When you have a domain name it automatically comes as a URL right? and you can Google it right?(ex.www.puja.com) I don't want visitors, cause it's and intranet for my client company.

  35. QUESTION:
    Free Web Hosting/Domain With Ads?
I know that some sites offer you free domain registration, but I have failed in finding free web hosting WITH the domain.

I am wondering if there are any sites that will give you a domain name (such as www.domainname.net), but in return put ads on your site?

A lot of places like freewebs have urls such as freewebs.com/username with adds for the free package, but are there any sites that will give you a domain name and free web hosting if they can advertise on it?

    Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
Check out this article about how to get both free domain name, and free web hosting and no need for even any ads!

      http://www.ilovefreesoftware.com/02/articles/free-website-with-free-hosting-and-free-domain-name.html

  36. QUESTION:
Can two separate organizations' websites (with separate domain names) share one host?
As it stands now, there are two separate (yet legally related) non-profit organizations with two separate websites (each with their own domain name and host). One website is http://www.fbpcs.org and the other is http://www.fabbs.org.

However, both organizations are looking to redesign their websites and pool their resources.

What they want is to have one single website with pages of content for FABBS and pages of content for FBPCS. The one website would have a unified design, one content management system, etc.

The trouble is that each organization wants pages with their content to have their organization's URL in the address bar. For example, if you are on the FABBS donation page on the site, the URL should be something like http://www.fabbs.org/donate.html but if on that page you clicked a link that took you to the FBPCS membership page, the URL would need to change to http://www.fbpcs.org/membership.html.

Is this even possible? We do NOT want one domain to simply redirect to the other, instead they need to switch back and forth based on content. We also can NOT use a third unified domain name (like www.fbpcsfabbs.org or something) or any type of subdomain.

Any advice you could provide would be great. Also, if you know of something like this in action elsewhere on the web, please post some links.

    Thanks.
It seems like the DNS solution would get visitors using both domain names to the same site, but what happens when they navigate through the site?

If they come in on www.fabbs.org, then look at FBPCS content, the URL would need to change. What if then they went back to a FABBS back - the URL would need to change again. The issue isn't about bringing them to the same site, it's the navigation once they are there.

  37. QUESTION:
How do I start and run a blog under my own domain name? (other than URL forwarding)?
Here is what I need to do:

I have a registered domain name. It can be hosted on windows or linux.

I need to start a blog under this domain name without using URL forwarding which forwards this domain to blogger.com or some other such site. I also need the blogging application to give me the some scope to choose from different templates and view visitor statistics etc.

Any help on how to do this would be much appreciated!

oops before i forget, hopefully this service should be free!!!

    • ANSWER:
Once you have bought your hosting package from a hosting provider such as http://www.dreamhost.com or http://www.anhosting.com you need to install a piece of blogging software such as Drupal (http://www.drupal.org), Movable Type (http://www.moveabletype.org) or WordPress (http://www.wordpress.org)

At that point you just need to setup your favored theme and add some content and your blog is away :)

  38. QUESTION:

I have 17 domain names and godaddy takes 3.99$ for each domain name per month. So, I pay them 67.83$ monthly.

I've just read on forums that there are Unlimited Domain name Hosting opportunities (when you pay only for one hosting account (about 7-10 $) and are able to upload a lot of URL sites on that hosting account.

  39. QUESTION:
does anyone know where i can get a FREE domain name ?
domain name only. i already got someone to host me.. sooo i only need a URL/domain name. FREE, please. know any ?

    • ANSWER:
You are better off buying a domain/hosting yourself. When you get a domain/hosting for free, there is always a catch and it's usually only temporary, like a year or so.

There is absolutely no surefire way of getting a free domain/hosting.

You are probably one of those "I don't know how to web design, but I want my own domain just because and if you tell me anything else, I'll report you." kind of people, but hey, it's the truth. Wait until you're old enough to buy one dear. (I am assuming you're a teenager, if you're just cheap, then I apologize, but due to your typing/speech patterns, you are definitely under the age of 18.)

Not to mention, you are like the 15th person to ask this question, this week ALONE. And all of you are probably teenagers....Learn to get things yourself. Almost nothing is free anymore.

  40. QUESTION:
Please help-very detailed question about setting up a domain name?
I'm trying to learn how to host my own website. So far I've activated the Windows IIS feature, activated localhost (I just followed some YouTube tutortial so this might not make much sense to you) and created a basic HTML page.. I can now open my website if I type in my IP address in my browser.. I still don't think I'm actually hosting the site though, because I couldn't open it from my other computer, but I'll figure that out later.

Anyway, I'm supposed to set up the free domain I created on co.cc, and my questions really are:
-How do I find my name server(s) if I'm hosting my own site?
-What do I enter for "zone records" (there's a field for "host", "TTL", "type" and "value")?
-Should I enter anything for "URL forwarding"?

Any other help would be appreciated, as I'm very new to website hosting, domain names, etc.

    Thanks a lot!!

    • ANSWER:
I would recommend dynDNS from zoneedit. They will be your nameserver for free.

      You don't need URL forwarding.

  41. QUESTION:
How do I "point" my domain registered at one company to the server in another company where I bought hosting?
I registered a domain with sitelutions.com last year. Now I am going to buy a hosting package with another company. I was told that I can point my domain to the server of the company that I bought the hosting from . How do I do this? What is this called? URL redirection? DNS? Or what? I don't know the terminology. But anyways, how to do make it so that when you type in the domain name on your browser, you get webpages coming form the hosting company's server?

    • ANSWER:
You find out what the nameserver address it and you type that in at your domain account.

  42. QUESTION:
    Help me understand domain names?
If I buy a domain name, would the rest of my pages uploaded to my server have the domain name included in the URL? IE. "www.bob.com/aboutus" ? Or does it have to go back to being the server URL? (IE. "www.webhost.com/users/bob/aboutus.html").

Also, if I use blogger.com as my blog host, will the URL have to be directed to a blogger URL (blogspot.bob.com) or can I still use a domain name bob.com/blog without purchasing another domain?

    Thanks!
Wow, you don't get it at all, guy.

  44. QUESTION:
I am having trouble with transferring a domain name i just brought into my hosting account.?
Ok, so i just purchased a new domain name from go-daddy.
I already have a hosting account with host-gator, so i just changed both the name servers to my own.
Then i went through hostgator and went through add-on domains.
Now this was all successful, and i even installed wordpress on the domain.

However, when trying to access my domain through its URL, it still comes up with go-daddy stuff.
Once i even managed to log into my WordPress account (with the /wp-admin/ extension) but after I clicked on add page, it all of a sudden went back to godaddy?

I dont know what i have done wrong, any help would be greatly appreaciated.

    Thank you in advance

    James

    • ANSWER:
      Hi James,

It sounds like you did everything correctly. Still, you might want to check GoDaddy and make sure the name servers are correct.

Generally it takes a few hours to a day for the domain name to "propagate" through all of the name servers.

The problem is most likely your Internet Service Provider's name servers have not been updated with your domain information yet.

My experience with GoDaddy, Hostgator, and AT&T is a couple of hours to one day.

Hang in there, you should be up soon.

  45. QUESTION:
I already have a website hosted, but I want a new url. Is there a site where I can buy a new domain name?
I run a webcomic on the SmackJeeves hosting but since they require their site name in the url and my comic partner and I do not want that, we decided to buy our own url to get rid of that. Is there a good, legitimate site that offers urls for pre-existing sites at a low cost?

    • ANSWER:
i buy my domains through 1and1.com since its only 6.99 per domain per year...which is 3 dollars cheaper than godaddy. I have about 20 domains with them.

they also have a sale that ends in 4 days and you can purchase .info sites for .99 a year.

  46. QUESTION:
WHICH WEBSITE GIVES FREE DOMAIN NAMES LIKE "www.myname.com"?
let it be a blog or a website.

The main thing is that, its URL should not look like this "www.myname.serviceprovider.com" and
its page should not contain the service provider's adverts.

That free website should be absolutely free and there should not have any hidden cost.

What i mean is that the maintenance and the webpage building will be done by myself. But the provider must provide a free space to host and a domain name as expected.

    • ANSWER:
      You have two choices:

      1. a .info domain from 1&1 (includes a 5 page website)
      http://www.1and1.com/?k_id=8292866

      2. Office Live from Microsoft (requires a Hotmail account)
      http://officelive.microsoft.com/

  47. QUESTION:
Uploaded site to new host but IP url still shows starter page?
I think i'm close to fixing it but am out of ideas. I've not even managed to test the vbulletin transfer yet. I've uploaded my old hosts content on to the new one, folder structure is maintained within the public_html folder.

I've backed up the SQL database on the old site and have created the same database name and user on the new site along with the import of the database.

I've deleted the default.html file on the new hosts FTP hoping this would shift the default message i get when i go to the IP url (domain name servers not changed yet) but the default webpage still shows. From what i have done, is there something i have missed?

Website is .php files, not html if that makes any difference.

    Thanks for looking

    • ANSWER:
Dont forget you can provide a redirect to the proper index page but placing a .htaccess file and defining it within there as to where the main index.php or index.html or located.

  49. QUESTION:
How can I SEO redirect a domain bought outside my hosting account it to my main hosting account?
Hello, I bought a domain name outside of my hosting account. Please check out www.pintpixel.com and if you clicked on one of the links on the main navigation bar, it will still remain pintpixel.com on the URL address bar. At first, this is ok for me, but I found out that it is not a SEO friendly way to redirect the domain to my main hosting account. It's a masked redirection. How do I do it so that the domain will look like a normal domain (like for example www.pintpixel.com/rates)? Do I really need to pay my main hosting account for the domain transfer? Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
I was wondering what this question was really about when I visited the site and noticed that everything on the new domain is just the old domain contained in a frame! I would advise against this at all because, first of all, frames cripple usability and SEO by referencing pages within pages, basically complicating a web page unnecessarily. Secondly, the new site will not rank for anything because all of its content is on the old site.

You may have to transfer the domain. Contact your hosting company and see how much they charge for that service. It usually doesn't cost much. My hosting company, u2-web, charges .99 for a domain name transfer.

What you need to do is transfer your domain to your current web host and then from there, set it up so that the new domain contains your site. Usually, with a hosting service, all you'd have to do is rename the site's root directory to the new name.

For example, I have a couple of sites hosted on the same server. They're contained in different folders called things like /pigswill.org and /seowarp.com when I view them in the file manager. If yours is similar, after the transfer, you should be able to copy /pintpixel.net as /pintpixel.com.

On your old site, you will have to configure it so that your old pintpixel.net pages get 301 redirects to your new pintpixel.com pages which you can do with .htaccess files, your hosting's control panel, or by asking your hosting for help.

If you keep both sites around, you may be penalized in search engines for having duplicate content, not to mention your site will be spread out in two locations (you want all of your attention going to one site so that site gets ranked higher in search engine results pages).

      Good luck!

  50. QUESTION:
    Domain Transfer.. Server Problems?
i'm not too familiar with the technical language of web hosting, i basically took over a website with zero knowledge and am trying to learn it as i go.

basically the people who created the site originally paid for the space and url (domain name?) from www.combohost.net which if you go check out has completely disappeared at this point and so has my website. (yes i realized that i got screwed by the previous owners)

when i look up the domain at whois.sc this is the information that i get

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v354/sanonomiko/webquestion.jpg

is my fear correct that basically the people we paid to host are no longer around? i and some friends have tried to contact the company but with no luck.

i've been trying to do some research and is my understand correct that since it says registrar status: clienttransferprohibited that i am not able to move the domain to a different server that can host my site? i don't know how who to contact to get the necessary codes to do intitate a transfer if thats even possible at this point

i'm really at a lost as to what to do. from what i can tell at the rest of the whois information combohost.net registered the domain name at http://domain.bebest.net (it is a thai based site) and i dont have any member login information at all.

am i basically at a lost at this point since i cannot get in contact with anyone?

i would love to keep the original domain name but if i must switch it as a last resort then i guess that is what i would have to do but i wanted to make sure that i covered all the basis

if my domain name is .com and no one else has it registered can i keep the same domain name but make it .net instead? or there any restrictions on that?
