      check my profile for my site. it is hosted by a free host. no force ads at all. their forum is very very helpful. if you have your own domain name they would host it for free. but i believe limitation for upload file is 500KB. so i guess mp3 or videos won't make it. anyhow you can store big file or videos at any free file or image hosting company. hosting files with free file or image hosting company has limitation too and that is if your files is not been download or use after 30 days it will be deleted. if that happen you need to upload that files again and get new URL for it. well that is what free thing all about. can't blame them.

      I don't recommend using free web hosting but if you must check out http://www.thefreehosts.com From reading you description of how you are trying to install Joomla 1.6 I think your problem is uploading a zip file to try and install it. You have to unzip the zip installation and then upload all of the files to the proper directory not upload the zip file. Once you have uploaded all of the files create a mysql database for the Joomla 1.6 installation then run the installation and put in the mysql database information.
